One of my main focuses is businessbooks. Besides spreading knowlegde on leadership and business to lesser developed parts of the world, we can learn from groundbreaking books. Simple, but disruptive techniques can help underdeveloped groups to get in touch with us. I like to refer to two very recently published books: Tribes We need you to leed us by Seth Godin (Portfolio 2008) and Iconoclast A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently by Gregory Berns (HBSP 2008). An iconoclast is a person who does something that others say can’t be done. A quote from the book:
” The successfull iconoclast learns to see things clearly for what they are and is not influenced by other peoples opinions. He keeps his amygdala in check and doesn’t let fear rule his decisions. And he expertly navigates the complicated waters of social networking so that other people eventually come to see things the way he does.”
Tribes are becoming powerful groups of people who can initiate change. To run a tribe you need ideas, vision and leadership. And overcome your fear to stand up as a leader and implement. Godin gives valuable insight on how to start and run a modern tribe. The leaders of tomorrow are playing in tribes & guilds. Tribes in World of Warcraft or other virtual world where you can experiment, learn and overcome your fear to lead. Berns deeply explains the psychological barriers one has to overcome to think differently. This also has to do with fear. We need the young people and modern views on tribes and overcome our fears and lead this world to end poverty.
